MADELINE GINS: INFINITE SYSTEMS
Hessel Museum of Art, April 5 - May 25, 2025
Madeline Gins: Infinite Systems—the first solo exhibition of work by the late artist-architect-poet Madeline Gins—shifts the focus from her collaborations with her husband, Arakawa, under the moniker Arakawa+Gins, to her own forward-thinking body of work, which is lesser known and rarely seen.
The exhibition offers a long-overdue exploration of her independent practice across visual art, poetry, performance, film, and scientific research. A constellation of writing and visual works from the 1960s to the 2000s, many of which are being exhibited for the first time, are showcased alongside archival materials, including ephemera, manuscripts, and photographs drawn from the Reversible Destiny Foundation. The exhibited works reveal Gins’s enduring provocation: to radically stretch the bounds of consciousness, paving the way for new modes of thinking.
Madeline Gins: Infinite Systems is curated by Charlotte Youkilis as part of the requirements for the master of arts degree at the Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College. The exhibition is accompanied by a publication with original contributions by Susan Bee, Lucy Ives, Tausif Noor, and Aviva Silverman (printed at 1080PRESS) and a public program held at Giorno Poetry Systems. In addition to general support provided by CCS Bard, the exhibition and publication were made possible by The Jenni Crain Foundation, an initiative dedicated to preserving the legacy of the esteemed artist and curator.
